VISITING SCHOLARS

AE Newsletter -Spring/Summer 2003

We are pleased to welcome two visiting scholars to the Architectural Engineering Department.

Dr. Kyoo Dong Song is an assistant professor at the School of Architecture at the Hanyang University in South Korea. He earned a Ph.D. in Architecture from the College of Architecture at Texas A&M University. Dr. Song’s field of study is design and analysis of daylighting and artificial lighting for buildings. He is especially interested in developing lighting analysis tools based on the Monte Carlo method and the Ray-tracing technique, as well as the application of the RADIANCE program to architectural lighting analysis and design.

While at Penn State, Dr. Song is collaborating with AE Professors Richard Mistrick and Martin Moeck on research related to daylighting and lighting-related studies. This group effort should result in several co-authored papers being submitted for publication in technical journals in the discipline. Dr. Song will also be working on developing an Internet web-based lighting analysis system using the RADIANCE engine. This project is being funded by the Korean Ministry of Construction and Transportation.

Dr. Junhui (Jason) Jia is visiting the AE Department as a post doctoral fellow. Dr. Jia received his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from West Virginia University, and his research interests are fatigue, fracture and damage mechanics, finite element analysis, concrete, and FRP composites.

While at Penn State, Dr. Jia will focus on an NSF project: "Long term degradation mechanisms of bond in concrete reinforced with fiber reinforced polymers (FRP)." He’d like to finish his training in the next 2-3 years, with an opportunity to teach a course during that time, and then begin an academic career. His research work is supervised/collaborated by Dr. Thomas Boothby in AE and by Dr. Charles Bakis in the Engineering Science and Mechanics Department.
