FACULTY HONORS
Dr. Linda Hanagan was awarded the
Faculty Fellowship from the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). The
fellowship is awarded to talented faculty to encourage innovation in structural
steel design and construction. Dr. Hanagan received this award for her
innovation and development in floor vibration research.
Dr. Louis Geschwindner presented the award to Dr. Hanagan (above) on behalf
of AISC.
Dr. David Riley has been notified by the National
Science Foundation that he will receive a three-year NSF Award for his proposal
: “An Experimental Pedagogy in Sustainable Building Technologies: Integrating
Teaching, Research and Public Scholarship.” Drs. Thomas Boothby and Jelena
Srebric will serve as co-principal investigators on this multi-disciplinary
project.
Dr. Riley has also been awarded a three-year grant from the
Schreyer Institute at Penn State to continue his interdisciplin-ary work
with service learning and sustainable housing on American Indian reservations.
The 2003 Penn State Engineering Society Awards were announced
at a ceremony held on campus on Mar. 21. Dr. Linda Hanagan received
the PSES Outstanding Teaching Award and Associate Professor Kevin Parfitt
received the PSES Outstanding Advising Award. |
Dr. Louis Geschwindner gave a
keynote address at the North American Steel Construction Conference, Apr. 2-5,
2003. Dr. Geschwindner’s speech, “Evolution of the AISC Specification—The
Next Steps,” introduced some of the preliminary provisions of a new unified
specification that will bring permit the designer to follow any of the design
and loading requirements established in the applicable building codes.
COMMENCEMENT
Commencement for the College of Engineering was held on May 16, 2003.
Architectural Engineering conferred 43 B.A.E., 13 M.A.E., 2 M.S., and 1 M.Eng.
degrees. An evening reception was held in the Bryce Jordan Center for the
AE graduates, their guests, and AE faculty and staff. Congratulations to
our most recent graduates!
STUDENT MARSHAL
David A. Knapp was named
the class stud ent
marshal to represent AE in the spring 2003 commencement ceremony. Dr. Louis
F. Geschwindner served as faculty marshal.
During his academic career in Penn State AE, David has
been named to the Dean’s list every semester. He received the Holbert
Apple Associates Outstanding Performance in Structures 4th-Year
Class Award. He served as President for both the Penn State Structural
Engineers Association and his fraternity, Sigma Chi, where he was also named
Brother of the Year. He was a member of Phi Alpha Epsilon Architectural
Engineering Honors Fraternity, and in 2002, he danced in ‘Thon.
In addition to being named student marshal, he was awarded
a life membership in the Penn State Alumni Association.

OPEN HOUSE
Special thanks to Dr. Martin Moeck and AE student envoy volunteers who
coordinated tours of the AE Department facilities during the annual College of
Engineering Open House held March 1, 2003. A total of 268
prospective students and their parents enjoyed the tours of the AE Department
facilities and interactions with AE students and faculty.
SSAE OPTION SOCIAL
The Student Society of Architectural Engineers (SSAE) and the AE Department
co-sponsored the annual Options Social on March 31, 2003 at the Nittany Lion
Inn. Thirteen professionals represented the four options (structural,
mechanical, lighting/electrical, and construction management) in the AE
curriculum.
The event included a dinner for the professionals, a panel discussion, and a
reception. Everyone who attended found the evening to be very informative and
educational.

IPAC MEETING HELD
The Industrial and Professional Advisory Council (IPAC) meetings were held in
the College of Engineering on April 2-4, 2003. AE faculty and student
representatives consulted at length with five members of industry. The focus of the
discussions was Strategic Planning for the new Indoor Environment Center.”
