Outstanding Engineering Alumni Award

On April 19, 2004, Mr. Gary R. Steffy, ’77, became the recipient of this year’s Outstanding Engineering Alumnus Award. A tour of the AE Department by Dr. Richard Behr was followed by a ceremony and reception at the Nittany Lion Inn.

In 1982, Gary Steffy founded his architectural lighting design firm in Ann Arbor, MI. His national and international projects have included residences, libraries, chapels and cathedrals, corporate headquarters, corporate and college campuses, hotels and hospitality facilities, and master plans.

In addition to his administrative and leadership responsibilities as principal and president of Gary Steffy Lighting Design, Inc., Steffy actively participates in project design and consultation at his firm.

Throughout his career, Steffy has also remained active in many other areas of the lighting profession. He taught lighting courses at Penn State, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Wayne State University.

He has written several books on architectural lighting. In fact, his book, Time-Saver Standards for Architectural Lighting, is considered by many professionals in the field to be the “bible” of architectural graphic standards for lighting.

Steffy was elected a Fellow of the International Association of Lighting Designers in 1993. He was a past president of the organization and currently serves as a corporate member of the association.

The faculty and staff of the Department of Architectural Engineering join in congratulating Gary Steffy on the prestigious honor of being named a 2004 Outstanding Engineering Alumnus.
