AE DEPARTMENT WELL-REPRESENTED AT PENN STATE DANCE MARATHON 2004
AE undergraduate students showed their support and assisted a worthwhile charity by participating in the 2004 Dance Marathon, commonly referred to as THON. The AE students served as dancers, moralers, and committee members. Graduate teaching assistant, Jonathan Dougherty (BAE ’99), was invited by several AE undergraduate students to participate in the faculty activities related to the 48-hour Dance Marathon. THON is the largest student run philanthropy event in the country, and this year over $3.5 million was raised to benefit the Four Diamonds Fund.

The photo above was taken during THON weekend at Rec Hall. Row 1 (L to R): Amy Pastor, fourth year; Jayme Antolik, third year. Row 2 (L to R): Brian Genduso, fifth year; Julia Thorpe, third year; Jonathan Dougherty; A. J. Kessinger, fifth year. Other AE students who were involved with THON but are not pictured here include Emily Whitbeck, fourth year; Geoff Measel, fifth year; and Mike Carroll, fifth year.

WORLD TRADE CENTER ARTWORK RAISES $250.00
Student donated artwork, titled Where's Arcimboldo?, raised $250.00 at the 9th Annual "Inspiration Award" Dinner and Silent Auction. Proceeds of the event, held on April 8, 2004 at the Nittany Lion Inn, went to the Penn State Diabetes Center. The piece, a WTC site model created by 16 architectural engineering students in the ARCH 130A Visual Communications service course (Fall 2002-03), was originally exhibited in a show titled, Parallel Reflection on the World Trade Center: A Vision of Recovery and Remembrance, at New Century Artists Inc. (530 W. 25th St., Suite 406, NY, NY), sponsored in part by the Raymond A. Bowers Program for Excellence in Design and Construction of the Built Environment, January 1-February 2, 2003.

CONGRATULATIONS!
In a small civil ceremony on February 21, 2004, Carlos Gomes, Master’s of Science student in the mechanical option of Architectural Engineering, married his girlfriend of four years, Kristin Hoyne, in Las Vegas.

Elvis wasn’t at the ceremony – but he showed up at the dinner afterwards in the form of a surprise singing telegram!! Viva Las Vegas, Blue Suede Shoes, Love me Tender… all songs that Elvis sang while dancing to the amusement and surprise of the whole group!

Carlos and Kristin also plan to have a more formal religious ceremony next summer in Carlos’s hometown of Porto, Portugal. Congratulations to the newly married couple!
