An issue that turned out to be a red herring.
Based upon recent research by Professor Robert Dexter at the University of Minnesota, column flange through-thickness strength is much higher than the demand that could be generated by a beam flange (or other attachment), making through-thickness failure of column flanges highly unlikely.
