Travel
Everyone who travels to Leeds should try to travel through Europe. Plan your trip early so that you can see everything you want, and save money. It is better to travel before the semester begins because the weather is nicer, and you will have more time because classes in Leeds start later than at Penn State.
Tours
Inexperienced travelers may want to buy a tour package. On a tour you will travel to popular destination by bus with a group of people and a knowledgeable tour guide. The most well known tours are provided by Contiki. Travel agents will also have more information about other tours.
Travel Agents
There are a few travel agents in State College. All of them will be able to offer tours and help plan your itinerary. The best travel agency will be able to help you while you are traveling. Make sure they clearly explain all the details of your tickets before you purchase them.

Backpacking
Some people don't like to be restricted by a tour schedule so backpacking is a great option. Read advice from a former AE student who backpacked through Europe. Rail passes can be purchased in the US before you leave. The Eurail web site has more information on rail passes and youth discounts. The train system schedules are not complicated. Have your trip well planned so get to see every city on your list. Also buy a few good travel books so you know what to expect in each city.
Youth Hostels, Hotels, Bed & Breakfast
Hostels are a cheaper alternative to hotels. At some hostels you will need to rent bedding or a sleep sheet. A sleep sheet is like a sack; the bottom of the sheets are sewn together. Some hostels have curfews, and if you stay out too late you may be locked out for the night. Visit the Youth Hostels Association of of England and Wales.
Hotels in Europe are not at the same quality as in the United States. Most of the hotels you will be able to afford will be like a Motel 6. There is nothing fancy about the rooms.
In England and Scotland sometimes Bed & Breakfast's are more affordable than hotels and hostels, and breakfast is included.
More advice on hostels can be found on the backpacking site.
Travel through the United Kingdom
While you are staying in Leeds you will want to explore the cities nearby such as York and Manchester. Travel by bus or train to these cities is convenient for a short day trip.
