Living Arrangements
Housing is available through a pre-arranged housing contract, or students can elect to find housing in Rome independently, for the seven-week period. The prearranged housing costs 1500 Euro (approx. 2100 dollars) plus a 300 Euro (approx. $400) deposit for the seven-week period. Pre-arranged housing is located at Piazza Navona, Vicolo delle Vacche, Campodi Fiori and other reasonable locations a short walk from studio and the other Sede di Roma facilities. Most housing are in the immediate vicinity.
It is possible that not all AE's will be housed together in the same apartment building as there are a number of other Penn State summer Rome programs (IPN, HDFS, CAS, etc).
The apartments are furnished and will not require any additional house wares, with the exception of:
- Towels: bring towels that you can dispose of at the end of your stay or purchase some in Rome when you arrive.
- Cooking and Eating Utensils: Basic utensils are provided.
- Bed Sheets: Clean, but previously used sheets ARE available. However, if you want new sheets, you should budget some money to buy inexpensive sheets when you arrive in Italy and determine the size you will need.
Housing Regulations (Housing regulations are very serious matters)
- Students are housed in apartment buildings in Rome prearranged by the staff of sede di Roma. They have put their reputation and good will forward on the students’ behalf. These apartments are rented to Sede di Roma. Students are essentially “sponsored” by the program. Therefore, students must follow all regulations precisely or risk losing the housing privileges and perhaps return to the U.S.
- Students must be quite in the apartment building at night. At Navona, the other building occupants are affiliated with the church or the building owner. The buildings are not typically student housing.
- Because of Rome’s hot summers and street noise, bedrooms are located on the courtyard side. With windows open, any noise will be amplified due to the reverberant nature of the structure.
- Students are expected to leave the facilities in a similar state of cleanliness as prior to occupancy. Cleaning costs will be deducted from the deposit to cover cleaning costs. This applies to studio as well.
- Student should always think about the best interest of the program and act appropriately. Individual freedoms customary on U.S. campuses do not automatically extend to this program and a different country. Any infractions viewed by the program director as placing the program or other students in jeopardy will result in the student being removed from the premise and possibly dismissed from the program. Student may forfeit all remaining fees and tuition as the result.
