Establishing an Endowment Gift
An endowment is a gift that is held in perpetuity and provides dependable support
for a specific need. The University invests the initial gift and spends only
a portion of the average annual investment return. The remainder is added to
the principal as protection against inflation. Endowments can be set up to support
a wide range of purposes depending on the individual donor’s particular
area of interest—from scholarships to professorships, from degree programs
to research laboratories, and more.
Endowments blend a donor’s vision with the Department’s needs and
objectives and contribute substantially to the quality of engineering education
and the Department. The dependable revenue stream provided by endowment income
helps reduce reliance on external funding sources and will be essential to our
ability to produce world-class engineers and leaders for generations to come.
Types of giving opportunities
Scholarships
A named, endowed scholarship offers critical support and recognition for students,
making a tremendous impact on a student's future.
Graduate Fellowships
More than ever, America needs gifted and dedicated engineers to build and transfer
new technologies to classrooms, industry, and government agencies. Graduate
students are mentors for undergraduates, embody the next generation of engineering
educators. The competition for the most talented advanced-degree students is
strong on the national level, and the most effective recruiting tool is the
graduate fellowship.
Faculty Support
Outstanding teaching begins with faculty who are the elite in their profession.
Endowed chairs and professorships are among the most important assets a Department
can have in assembling and maintaining a distinguished faculty. Such endowments
offer a stable and dependable source of income for special teaching and research
needs, maintaining cutting-edge research equipment, salary supplements, and
meeting professional travel expenses. Competition for outstanding engineering
faculty is intense, and endowed support maintains the Department's competitiveness
for the nation's best—from innovative young faculty to senior faculty
with established national and international reputations.
Program Support
Funding for program development is crucial to maintaining excellence, creating
a flexible approach to engineering education and research, establishing new
programs to meet emerging needs, and providing a world-class education for our
students.
