THESIS EXPERIENCE

The AE senior thesis is a culminating project in the Architectural Engineering Program at The Pennsylvania State University. This project pulls together the subjects studied over the past four years and asks students to apply their knowledge in both their area of specialty, as well as two areas of breadth in which they are not specialized. The course is set up to guide students in the process of a professional design evaluation which will lead to a new proposal for value engineering in the building.

Although the course has a schedule and deadlines, the individual projects vary significantly. None of the coursework is done through lecture and each student is individually responsible for their own schedule and progress. For more information please look at the department's official Thesis Experience webpage.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I wish to extend my thanks to the following people for their assistance in sponsoring and supporting my work.

  • Kevin Matthews
For his generous loan of plans and specifications, his thorough and exciting tour of the building, and his infinite patience with my many questions.
  • Lane
For telling me all I needed to know about the control systems and giving a demonstration of the auditorium sound system. Also, for tolerating the fact that I go to Penn State. Let's hear a cheer for Drexel!
  • Jim Kerr
For his help hunting down a suitable building and putting me in touch with all the excellent people who have helped me with this project.

Note: While great efforts have been taken to provide accurate and complete information on the pages of this CPEP, please be aware that the information contained herewith is considered a work-in-progress for this thesis project. Modifications and changes related to the original building designs and construction methodologies for this senior thesis project are solely the interpretation of Brendon J. Burley. Changes and discrepancies in no way imply that the original design contained errors or was flawed. Differing assumptions, code references, requirements, and methodologies have been incorporated into this thesis project; therefore, investigation results may vary from the original design.
