 About Megan Kohut

Megan Kohut grew up in Saint Louis, Missouri and knew she wanted to become an engineer since she was in grade school.  She is currently enrolled at Penn State University as a fifth year architectural engineering student in the structural option.  In May 2008, Megan will graduate with a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering, a Master of Architectural Engineering, and a minor in Engineering Entrepreneurship.  She passed her Fundamentals of Engineering exam in October 2006.  Upon graduation, Megan will be well-rounded in every major building material including concrete, steel, wood, masonry, and foundations.

Megan was offered her first engineering internship in the summer of 2005 when she went to work for Penn State’s Office of Physical Plant in the Department of Design and Construction.  At OPP, she gained experience with project management, scheduling, and bidding.  She was even made project manager of various minor projects around campus such as the repair of a large stone wall located behind Hammond Building.  In January of 2007, Megan moved to OPP’s Department of Design Services where she worked for the university’s structural engineer on various campus projects.  Here, she designed an entire steel catwalk system in the attic space of one building on campus.  This project brought many challenges including how to connect the catwalk to the existing roof structure without welding.  In the summer of 2007, Megan worked for Rathgeber/Goss Associates, a structural consulting company in Rockville, Maryland.  At RGA, she worked on various projects using a range of building materials.  She gained design experience including a two-way slab system for a five-star resort and spa, several foundation projects including a crane mat footing, and a steel lateral system for a retirement complex.  Upon returning to State College for her final year of school, Megan went back to work for the university’s physical plant where she plans on working until graduation.

Megan is a dedicated student with exceptional work ethic.  She is completing  a six year curriculum in only five years all while maintaining a part-time job her final three years of school.  In May 2007, Megan was awarded the Louis and Judy Geschwindner Endowment Scholarship from her professor, a well-known and respected structural engineer.

In her spare time, Megan enjoys going for hikes with her two dogs, Abbey Road and Dakota.  She is also a saltwater reef aquarium hobbyist and a certified SCUBA diver.  Megan loves photography and enjoys scrapbooking her memories.  She is also a huge sports fan including her home town St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Upon graduation, Megan hopes to work for a structural firm that can offer her invaluable experience.  She plans on taking the P.E. exam as soon as possible.  In the future, Megan hopes to be the owner of an engineering firm and gain licensure as an S.E.
