Thesis Proposal

The thesis proposal is a detailed document explaining the work to be performed in the spring semester of senior thesis for the Newseum and Freedom Forum Headquarters building. For lighting I will be redesigning four spaces including the exterior entrance, welcoming lobby, news history gallery, and freedom forum offices. The electrical portion will redesign these four spaces as well as analyze posibilites to use wind turbines, and energy efficient transformers. Breadth topics are mechanical and architecutre.

Breadth Work

Breadth 1: Architectural Breadth

The Architectural Breadth will consitst of redesigning the look of the roof for the Newseum and Freedom Forum Headquarters. With the addition of wind turbines from the electrical depth, the roof space will have to be redesigned to keep the lines and modern feel that the existing building has. One can not simply place the turbines on the roof and expect it to fit in with the aesthetics of the building. A cost study will be performed with regard to the use of additional materials used in the redesign. This will be used to give an approximation of how long it will take for the energy cost savings of the turbines to pay for the addition to the building.

Breadth 2: Mechanical Breadth

The News History Gallery space includes exhibits and artifacts which must be kept in humidity controlled cases. An analysis of the existing system will be performed, and additional systems to provide controled air to the space will be looked into. Recommended values for humidity surrounding museum artifacts will be used in the calculations. Calculaitons will also be performed to ensure that the new lighting in the design will not increase the temperature inside the cases to an undesireable level. A cost analysis will then be performed to chose the best system.
