Alissa Leigh Popovich

Alissa is currently a 5th year student enrolled in the ABET-accredited Structural Architectural Engineering Program at the Pennsylvania State University. In May 2009, she will graduate with both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree of Architectural Engineering. She will also be eligible for EIT status upon graduation.

During the summer of 2007, Alissa studied abroad in Rome, Italy, and the experience opened her eyes to historical structures as related to architectural engineering.  Along with her initial interest in new construction, she developed a passion for restorative engineering and historical analysis. This summer, Alissa took an internship with Robert Silman Associates in New York City. The firm specializes in historical analysis and restoration along with sustainable structural design of new buildings. The diversity among projects allowed Alissa to gain experience working with a variety of structures, modeling programs, and analysis methods. She greatly enjoyed the assortment of project types and the array of design perspectives, and she hopes to continue to expand the breadth of her structural work – from existing renovation projects, to adaptive reuse, to new construction.  

Outside of school, Alissa is a distance runner. She started running in high school when she joined the cross country team, and has continued to run during college; she enjoys the balance that athletics adds to her daily and academic life. She also loves the challenge of racing and has recently completed a 50 mile relay race with two of her classmates. Alissa is currently training for her fourth half marathon, but she hopes to run a full marathon within the next year.
