Student Reflection

A E 481W/482 Course Reflection
This year-long capstone AE Senior thesis project provided me with an invaluable learning experience.  AE Senior thesis has given me the opportunity to apply topics and theories learned throughout the past 4 years of architectural engineering coursework to an actual project.  It was also beneficial to gain experience using the latest codes and standards, as well as experience with decision making processes and engineering judgment issues associated with the everyday life of a structural engineer.  The course has also allowed me to effectively communicate with fellow students, professors, and professionals within the building industry in a professional setting.  Overall, I feel that this senior thesis project was a huge success, not only because of the individual project goals, but also because I feel it has prepared me for a career in structural engineering.

CPEP Discussion Board Reflection
I found the discussion board to be an extremely useful tool for this AE senior thesis project.  It is an excellent way to access design professionals with years of experience to help the learning process of senior thesis.  I used the discussion board for a few issues I came across througout the year, but it was also nice to see the responses of design professionals to problems other students were having.  In conclusion, I would recommend using the discussion for many years to come.

CPEP Reflection
The senior thesis e-portfolio was a great way to document the progress of my project throughout the year.  Not only is it a great resource to showcase student’s work for future employers, but it is a great way to communicate technical information with design professionals throughout the year.  I was able to obtain some valuable advice from engineers who are associated with the original design and construction of the John Jay College Expansion Project by providing them with a link to my portfolio.  It is also a great resource to display the hard work of students in the Architectural Engineering department.
