AE
Senior Thesis Reflection (AE 481W/482)
The first thought of
the fall semester: "HOW am I going to accomplish all this?!"
This project brought
together a wide variety of topics from multiple disciplines.
From the beginning I set out to design a full structural system for a
visually identical building in a location with significant seismic and
wind design forces. The project drew on knowledge gained in
numerous courses as well knowledge gained through "doing".
I became quite familiar with various building codes. With a solid educational base I was able to
tackle most challenges through careful examination of the subject matter, help from
various design professionals, and with past personal experience.
At times assumptions and decisions had to be made. I found
myself becoming comfortable with my assumptions and decisions through
rational thought and help from the engineering community. In the
end, I felt that I provided a good building structural system that
could not only be used in Charleston, SC, but in many locations along
the east coast.
Proper time management
was key throughout the year. With substantial experience in the
construction field, I decided to execute my thesis project as though it
were a construction project. Key deadlines were set before me
and it was up to me to break the overall project down into manageable
phases with realistic goals. By taking it one piece at a time, I
was able to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
Current thought of this
semester: "I can't believe I accomplished all this!"
CPEP & Discussion Board Reflection
The Capstone Project Electronic Portfolio has made
it easy for me to demonstrate my year's work. The small
inconvenience of managing a webpage is far outweighed by the ease of
data communication. I can simply refer to a graphic, picture, or
table rather than relying solely on words to explain a situation.
It also provides one central location where an individual can access
all my work.
The Discussion Board proved to be an invaluable
resource. The ability to have feedback and answers from knowledgeable
professionals readily available was an enormous factor in helping a
student to succeed. Through the discussion board, I gained knowledge
and insight from several professionals who continually provided
guidance and assistance to AE students. Their dedication to the Penn
State AE program is crucial to the success of the program.
