AE 481W/AE 482 Course Reflections

AE 481W/AE 482 has given me an opportunity to experience real life scenarios in an educational setting. Chasing down information, processing it, and using the data to reach conclusions in my research have prepared me for future assignments in my professional life.  The opportunity to pick my own building and research topics enabled me to become more involved with the project.  Having been a competitive swimmer most of my life, analyzing a natatorium was a very interesting experience. A natatorium is a unique building that I may never have the opportunity to construct in my professional career.  This course allowed me to experience this.

Over my five years of studying Architectural Engineering at Penn State I have finally had the opportunity to apply many of the concepts I learned.  Through the research brought about in this thesis project I have recognized the importance of many of the seemingly useless concepts.  This course has truly been a capstone to my educational experience at Penn State.

Above all, this course has taught me how to interact effectively with industry members as well as helped me make many personal relationships with industry members that could last throughout my professional career.

CPEP & Discussion Board Reflections

Having been a Web master for numerous special interest Web sites throughout my life, creating my CPEP site was not a challenge for me.  However, my CPEP site was a great opportunity for me to market myself to potential employers and advertise my thesis work.  During conversations, I was able to refer many curious industry members to this site.  Additionally, the site served as a great explanatory tool for project team members from my thesis building that did not understand what Penn State Architectural Engineering’s senior thesis project was about.  Allowing them to see past year’s work as well as my own helped them to supply information that was valuable to my research.

My thesis research never led me to using the Discussion Boards.  However, had the need arose I could see how this resource could have helped me.  For my specific project I was fortunate enough to able to contact industry members directly for inquiries.

The Capstone Project Electronic Portfolio (CPEP) is a web-based project and information center. It contains material produced for a year-long Senior Thesis class. Its purpose, in addition to providing central storage of individual assignments, is to foster communication and collaboration between student, faculty consultants, course instructors, and industry consultants. This website is dedicated to the research and analysis conducted via guidelines provided by the Department of Architectural Engineering.
