Student Biography

Matthew Vandersall is currently in his 5th year of study in the Architectural Engineering Program at The Pennsylvania State University. In December 2011, he will graduate with an Integrated Bachelor/Master of Architectural Engineering degree, with a focus in structural systems.  In October of 2009, Matt passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam and will receive E.I.T.  status upon graduation.  After graduation, Mr. Vandersall is looking forward to working as a structural engineer for a consulting or AE firm to gain knowledge and practical experience while pursuing his Professional Engineer (PE) license.

This past summer, Matt participated in Penn State’s undergraduate study abroad program in Rome, Italy for Architectural Engineering students.  This is a 12 credit, 7 week program allowing him to receive a minor in Architectural Studies.  The curriculum consisted of the study of cartography, exploration of architecture and urban spaces of Rome, and ancient Roman and medieval structural design.  Living in Italy allowed Matt to gain invaluable experience interacting with other cultures outside his norm.

Matt is a member of various professional and student organizations such as the Student Society of Architectural Engineers (SSAE), Structural Engineers Association (SEA), and the Earthquake Engineers Research Institute (EERI).  Outside of academics, Matt enjoys activities which include kayaking, hiking, and running.
