WELCOME TO GONZALO LAY'S AE SENIOR THESIS E-PORTFOLIO

Student Biography

  \
Gonzalo Lay is currently a fifth year student in the Architectural Engineering program at the Pennsylvania State University. In May 2014, he will graduate with a Bachelor Degree in Architectural Engineering with a main focus in Construction Management. Gonzalo is also pursuing certification in Residential Construction Management to further explore branches of the construction industry
Throughout his education abroad and college career, Gonzalo has gathered a wide variety of working and travelling experiences which have provided him with valuable assets that would potentially help any company. Over the past years, Gonzalo had the opportunity to live and experience different cultural areas in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and Kuwait. There, he helped his family in several residential construction projects, with interior renovations, electrical and lighting installations, and work procurement.
During the past two summers, Gonzalo participated in internships with Penn State Facilities Engineering Institute (PSFEI) as an Energy Auditor and with Penn State Office of Physical Plant (OPP) as an intern in the Contract Administration department. While interning with PSFEI, Gonzalo performed ASHRAE Standard Level II Energy Audits on 52 facilities in the prestigious Pennsylvania National Guard Base at Fort Indiantown Gap. As an intern with OPP, Gonzalo gained valuable experience and knowledge in the procurement of contractors and importance of safety and gathering existing building data. He analyzed, evaluated, and prequalified construction contractors of all trades which were interested in performing work for the different Penn State University campuses. He also participated in the making of checklists for the existing conditions at the Health and Human Development Building, while reviewing and updating construction documents.
Gonzalo is also active in both on and off campus activities, including being the secretary of the Student Chapter of the Partnership in Achieving Construction Excellence (S:PACE), a member of the Student Society of Architectural Engineering and supervising student intramural athlete activities with Penn State Rec Sports. Outside of academics, Gonzalo enjoys practicing volleyball, tennis, soccer, basketball, hiking, and long distance running.
