How to Use Co-op or Internship Credit

Each engineering department has its own rules for how co-op and internship credits can be applied to fulfill degree requirements.

Aerospace Engineering (AERSP)

Number of co-op or internship credits allowed:

  • 1 for ENGR 195
  • 1 for ENGR 295
  • 1 or 2 for ENGR 395
  • 1, 2, or 3 for ENGR 495

Internship credits: Students may earn up to 6 credits for multiple internships. The first 3 credits may be applied to the Limited Elective; the second 3 credits may be applied to the Technical Elective.

Co-op credits: The first 3 credits may be applied to the Limited Elective; the second 3 credits may be applied to the Technical Elective.


Architectural Engineering (AE)

Number of co-op or internship credits allowed: 1 each for ENGR 195–495

Internship credits: Add-on credit; does not apply towards degree requirements.

Co-op credits: Add-on credit; does not apply towards degree requirements.


Biological Engineering (BE)

Number of co-op or internship credits allowed: 1 each for ENGR 195–495

Internship credits: One credit may be substituted for ENGR 295 if student completes 2 additional co-op rotations (otherwise, these are add-on credits and do not apply towards degree requirements)

Co-op credits: May be substituted for Technical Selection; no credits will be applied until 3 co-op rotations are completed


Biomedical Engineering (BME)

Number of co-op or internship credits allowed: 1 each for ENGR 195–495

Internship credits: May be used on a case-by-case basis (see department adviser); students may earn 1–3 credits for multiple internships

Co-op credits: 3 credits may be substituted for the Science & Engineering Elective; a student may either earn 1 credit per rotation for 3 co-op rotations or 1 credit for the first rotation and 2 credits for a subsequent rotation after completing 2 semesters of work at the same company


Chemical Engineering (CHE)

Number of co-op or internship credits allowed: 1 each for ENGR 195–495

Internship credits: May be used to fulfill 3 credits of Professional Elective if 3 internships (or a combination of 3 internship experiences and co-op rotations) are completed

Co-op credits: May be used to fulfill 3 credits of Professional Elective if 3 co-op rotations (or a combination of 3 internship experiences and co-op rotations) are completed. Students who obtain 3 successive co-op credits may petition the CHE department to use the credits for a 3-credit Engineering Elective instead of the Professional Elective; petition requires submission of all 3 co-op End-of-Semester Reports and a one-page summary of the technical merits of the co-op assignment, and must be submitted after all 3 rotations are completed


Civil Engineering (CE)

Number of co-op or internship credits allowed: 1 each for ENGR 195–495

Internship credits: May be used on a case-by-case basis—see department adviser; alternatively, one credit may be substituted for ENGR 295 if student completes 2 additional co-op rotations

Co-op credits: May be substituted for General Elective; no credits will be applied until 3 co-op rotations are completed


Computer Engineering (CMPEN)

Number of co-op or internship credits allowed: 1 each for ENGR 195–495

Internship credits: Up to 2 internship credits may be substituted for Department List Electives

Co-op credits: Up to 3 co-op credits may be substituted for Department List Electives


Computer Science (CMPSC)

Number of co-op or internship credits allowed: 1 each for ENGR 195–495

Internship credits: Up to 2 internship credits may be substituted for Department List Electives

Co-op credits: Up to 3 co-op credits may be substituted for Department List Electives


Data Sciences (DATSC)

Number of co-op or internship credits allowed: 1 each for ENGR 195–495

Internship credits: Up to 2 internship credits may be substituted for Department List Electives

Co-op credits: Up to 3 co-op credits may be substituted for Department List Electives


Electrical Engineering (EE)

Number of co-op or internship credits allowed:

  • 1 for ENGR 195
  • 1 for ENGR 295
  • 1 or 2 for ENGR 395
  • 1, 2, or 3 for ENGR 495

Internship credits: Add-on credit; does not apply towards degree requirements

Co-op credits: May be substituted for Related Electives


Energy Engineering (ENENG)

Number of co-op or internship credits allowed: 1 each for ENGR 195–495

Internship credits: May be used on a case-by-case basis (see department adviser); students may earn 1–3 credits for multiple internships

Co-op credits: 3 credits may be applied to EGEE 494 requirement; students pursuing this option must speak with department coordinator before starting a work assignment as additional course assignments are required


Engineering Technology Majors (ET)
