For-Credit Option
Since 1985, the Co-op & Internship Program in the Engineering Career Resources & Employer Relations office has helped thousands of students obtain domestic or international career-related work experience prior to graduation. This optional program is one of the largest of its type in the United States.
Engineering Career Resources staff strongly encourage Co-op & Internship Program participants to seek credit for their work experiences. Students who complete credit-bearing work assignments will:
- Continue to make academic progress while earning money and gaining valuable workplace experience
- Retain full-time student status while enrolled for only 1–3 credits, with no in-class time required
- Typically retain eligibility for parental health insurance plans
- Continue to defer student loan repayments
- Receive ongoing support from Engineering Career Resources staff and academic advisers throughout the work experience
How To Obtain Credit
Once you have found a co-op or internship position for which you are interested in obtaining credit:
- Request an offer in writing from the hiring company or organization (if not already provided) and sign an official agreement to accept the position.
- Review the credit usage information so you know which co-op or internship course you want to be registered for during the work assignment (e.g., ENGR X95).
- Talk to your academic adviser or the department coordinator for your major about how you will use the co-op or internship credits toward the fulfillment of your degree requirements.
- Report the position to the Engineering Career Resources & Employer Relations office by completing the Co-op & Internship Placement Survey.
