Master of Science Programs

Depending upon prior educational backgrounds and educational and career objectives, students pursuing a masters' degree will direct their studies towards the Master of Science, the Master of Science in Engineering or the Master of Science in Civil Engineering degree. Further details concerning these degrees are supplied in Graduate  Bulletin.

Each student must select either the thesis option or the non-thesis option within the master's program. The thesis option requires a minimum of twenty-one (21) of approved course credits plus the preparation of a formal research thesis which is acceptable to the student's advisory committee. The non-thesis option substitutes an independent research study (minimum of 3 credit hours) for the formal research thesis, but requires a minimum of 30 credit hours to qualify for the degree. On the basis of this minimum requirement of 30 credit hours and a recommended course load of not more than 15 credit hours of graduate level work per semester, the non-thesis option requires a minimum of one calendar year to complete.

Doctor of Philosophy Program

Students are admitted to a doctoral program on the basis of superior performance in the master's program. Students who enroll in the doctoral program will, with the guidance of their major professors and advisory committees, develop individualized plans of study. These are directed toward the specialized career objectives and interests of each student, hence there is a wide range of possibilities.

Each Ph.D. student will be directed in his/her research by an advisory committee, chaired by a major professor who directs the research, and having not fewer than three members of the graduate faculty. The advisory committee is representative of the general field of study in which the student expects to do work. Before the student is admitted to candidacy for the Ph.D. degree, he/she is required to pass a preliminary and qualifying examinations in addition to the formal presentation of the Ph.D. research proposal.
