CE&M Program

The Construction Engineering and Management (CEM) Program has a long-standing mission to provided sensible educational opportunities to young engineers on topics that they will need to be successful in the early stages of their professional career. The opportunities arise in two areas.

The first area of instruction is in the specialty field of project management.  The goal of the CEM faculty is to provide education into various topical areas that are fundamental to one’s s ability to organize, plan, and execute an engineered construction project.  Instruction is in the topics of estimating, planning, scheduling, ethical decision-making, fundamental principles of site management, cost control, contracts, productivity control, and project development.  In each course, liberal use is made of real-world case studies that reinforce the topical material being discussed.  Some courses are taught as structured case studies.  Other courses are structured so the student interacts with their own real-world case study project. All courses are taught informally, and close interaction with the instructor is encouraged.  The instruction is enriched through the case studies, guest lectures, scaled models, and computer simulation.

The second area of instruction is a technical field of ones own choosing.  The goal of the CEM faculty is to assure that each student has sufficient underpinnings in a technical subject area to create an opportunity for successful professional licensure.  The technical field can be any field within the CEE Department, such as geotechnical, structural, etc.  CEM students are required to take at least two courses in a technical field, although more than two are encouraged.
