In a project sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Penn State developed a short span prefabricated bridge system to speed construction of new and replacement bridges. The concept consists of adjacent double cell box beams supported on precast concrete abutment units. The concrete abutment units have a double-T counterfort configuration and are post-tensioned to cast-in-place footings or pile caps. Two demonstration bridges were constructed in Summer 2000 and PennDOT will monitor performance in situ.
