The research conducted by a team of wood engineers and wood scientists at Penn State to support development of standard designs for hardwood glued-laminated timber highway bridges will be summarized. Discussion topics include preservative treatment evaluations, laminating processes, lamination layups, establishing design strengths of hardwood glued-laminated beams, quantification of composite beam-deck behavior, evaluation of combination layups, connector evaluations, standard plans, bridge construction, and results of performance monitoring.
