Graduate Application -- Instructions & Online Forms

There are three steps involved with formally applying to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Penn State:

  1. Complete the Graduate School On-Line Application
    a. $45.00 application fee is non-refundable
    b. this fee cannot be waived
  2. Complete the College of Engineering Supplemental Graduate Application Form on-line
  3. Mail your Statement of Purpose, Resume (if desired), official GRE report, official TOEFL report (if applicable), three letters of recommendation, official transcripts, diploma/degree certifications, and VISA application (if applicable) to the following address:

    • Statement of Purpose
      Be sure to include "area" of interest, i.e., Construction, Environmental, Geotechnical, Materials, Pavements, Structures, Transportation, or Water Resources

    • Resume, if desired

    • Official report of Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

      Photocopies are acceptable
      Must not be more than three years old

    • Official report of Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
      TOEFL web site Institution code: 2660; Departmental code: 65

    • Three Letters of Recommendation
      Recommendation letters must be sent directly from your references to the address above in a signed and sealed envelope
      There are no recommendation forms provided or required

    • Two official transcripts from all institutions of higher education attended, both undergraduate and graduate
      Notarized copies are not sufficient and will not be accepted
      International applicants must submit official or attested university record, with certified translations if the records are not in English

    • Diploma and Degree Certifications from all institutions of higher education attended, both undergraduate and graduate

    • Application for Visa Document

      NOTE: Please do not submit information with your application that cannot be used in the admission decision process, e. i., Individual Education Plans (IEP), medical records, statement from physicians or psychologists, or legal documents. Such information will be destroyed and will not be included in the application packet.
