Vineet Kamat, University of Michigan

Title: Advanced Applications of Mobile Augmented Reality in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction

Vineet Kamat is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan. He received a PhD in Civil Engineering at Virginia Tech in 2003; a MS in Civil Engineering at Virginia Tech in 2000; and a BE degree in Civil Engineering from Goa
University in India in 1998.

His research interests are primarily focused on virtual and augmented reality visualization, simulation, mobile computing, and their applications in Civil Engineering. He designed and implemented the VITASCOPE
visualization system as part of his doctoral research and is currently supervising the design and implementation of the ARVISCOPE outdoor augmented reality system at the University of Michigan.

He was awarded the ASCE Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering Best Paper Award in 2004 for the paper he co-authored with Julio Martinez, entitled "Dynamic 3D Visualization of Fluid Construction
Materials." He is also a co-recipient of the Best Paper Award at the 2005 Construction Research Congress for his paper entitled "Rapid Post-Disaster Evaluation of Building Damage Using Augmented Situational Visualization" which he co-authored with Sherif El-Tawil.

Timothy Shaw, Penn State Applied Research Lab

Title: Using a CAVE to Experience Full-scale Virtual Mockups for
Design and Construction

Mr. Timothy Shaw is the head of the Visualization division at the Penn State Applied Research Laboratory. In that role, Mr. Shaw is responsible for the division's technical vision and operation, as well as specific areas of applied research. His areas of expertise include advanced visualization environments, multi-source data
fusion, virtual reality, and platform modeling. Mr. Shaw has been involved in advanced modeling and simulation system development, research and technical management for over 20-years in both
industrial and academic environments.

Kurt Maldovan, Jacobs

Title: Virtual Hardhat Reviews

Kurt Maldovan is a Design and Construction Visualization Coordinator with Jacobs Architecture and Engineering Practice.  Kurt has a Bachelors of Architectural Engineering with an emphasis on Construction Management from the Pennsylvania State University.  He is also pursuing a graduate degree with research focused on “Optimizing the Design and Review Process with BIM and Interactive Workspaces”.  Kurt was a member of the Computer Integrated Construction Graduate Research team at Penn State where he was responsible for developing practical industry case studies and coordinating operations of the Immersive Construction (ICon) Lab. Kurt has extensive knowledge of BIM, information technologies, 4D modeling, and advanced visualization facilities.  In his role at Jacobs’, Kurt spans the gap between A/E projects designed in house and from designers on ongoing PM/CM projects.  In the design group Kurt uses his construction background to help designers design for construction.  With the PM/CM group, Kurt helps identify Virtual Design and Construction opportunities and define the base BIM scope of work including 4D modeling, collision detection, and simulation.  Kurt is also responsible for designing and constructing Jacobs’ mobile and in-office Visualization Labs.
