§         EDSGN 100: Introduction to Engineering Design, or equivalent such as EDSGN 130 [AE required course]

§         MATSE 492W-Materials Engineering Methodology and Design (Their students do not take EDSGN 100)

§         Other general design methods courses taken at Penn State or other universities may be substituted. (Transfer students)

Choose at least 9 credits from the following

·         Independent study using 494 or 496 in EDSGN for participation in a recognized on-going design project or independent study in design. This list is maintained by the Certificate Coordinator.  Certification will be done by the Coordinator, including requiring a written statement of the design duties performed in the project with the endorsement of a faculty mentor for the project or the student.

  • Up to 3 credits of a design internship & coop experience may be used, but this requires prior approval by the Coordinator.
  • Any 400-level or 500-level EDSGN Course [some 500-level courses admit exceptional undergraduates]

Other non-required, interdisciplinary design courses in engineering departments.  A list will be maintained by the certificate coordinator. Examples are provided below. Note that while required capstones are not included, a student taking a second, non-required capstone in any engineering department might be able to count it, if suitable.

Portfolio

  • Both an e-portfolio and a brochure portfolio are required. One credit of  EDSGN 496 will be used for this.
