Academics
Fall 2008 EDSGN Engineering Design and CAD courses. The Engineering Design Program (EDP) offers 400 level EDSGN courses for fall 2008 in Innovative Integrated (I2) Design, Sensors and Systems Controllers, Humanitarian Design, Pro-E, AutoCAD, and CATIA Most count towards the Certificate in Engineering Design. See the EDSGN Schedule of courses.
The Engineering Design Program is home to a dedicated group of about 20 engineering faculty who teach and research in design. By uniquely offering tenure track positions in engineering design, it has proven to be very competitive when recruiting nationally. The EDP is an interdisciplinary program that includes all engineering fields and beyond, while being constrained by none.
The EDP offers
- Design courses from the first year to graduate studies and off-site training in design methods and many sponsored & continuing design projects. The use of studio pedagogy in classes and on-going design projects is growing steadily.
- The award winning EDSGN 100 Introduction to Engineering Design that is taken by over 1,000 students at University Park and over 300 at the commonwealth campuses each year. Students intending to major in Computer Science and Engineering do not take EDSGN 100. Students intending to major in Architectural Engineering take EDSGN 130: Architectural Graphics and CAD
- A Certificate in Engineering Design that both serves the need for employers for engineers with interdisciplinary design skills and provides a pipeline for students who will pursue graduate studies in engineering design. A minor is also planned.
- Upper division courses in innovative, integrated (I2) Design, Sustainable Design, Global Design, and Design for Community Development. (These courses are often accepted as technical electives and by the Engineering Entrepreneurship Minor.)
- The home for the honors thesis area of engineering design for students in the Schreyer Honors College.
Graduate Programs
The EDP currently offers several graduate-level courses and research opportunities.
Graduate courses are available in systems design, design decision making, design for human variability, and innovative design.
