Outside of Latrine - The doors are marked "Gents" and "Ladies."
The Covenant Preparatory School is located in the community of Baoma, Sierra Leone. This school provides many services to the community with its primary mission being to provide education to children of less wealthy families. Because Baoma's drinking water comes from unprotected sources, the lack of latrines in the community is one reason that the water tests high with fecal coliforms. The communities polluted water sources have been making its residents sick for decades.
Diverting and treating human waste with latrines is one initial way EWB-PSU hopes to improve health in the community. The latrine at the Covenant Preparatory School will serve as a model for the rest of the community. More importantly, it will teach the school students, the future leaders of the community, the importance of proper sanitation practices and the impact it can have on the health of their community.
In May of 2012, a small team of students and mentors traveled to Baoma and implemented the latrine project. This project is just the first of many our chapter hopes to implement in Baoma and other communities worldwide.
