Introduction

  Faculty For The Future Purpose and History

Faculty for the Future, a ten-year, $20 million initiative of the GE Foundation, was designed to increase the number of women and under-represented minorities faculty in engineering, related sciences and business. From 1990-2000, Faculty For The Future has assisted nearly 200 students, who have earned PhD degrees and accepted faculty positions. Over 900 students are currently in the pipeline, working to gain faculty positions at colleges and universities across the US. Sponsored by the GE Foundation, WEPAN and its collaborators are pleased to offer www.engr.psu.edu/fff to continue to support the students interested in pursuing careers in academia.

Faculty For The Future is the only website dedicated to linking a diverse pool of women and under-represented minority candidates from engineering, science, and business with faculty and research positions at universities across the country. It was developed by Barbara Bogue and College of Engineering of The Pennsylvania State University as part of the Penn State GE Foundation Faculty for the Future Project and was merged into the capstone FFF WEPAN grant as part of multi institution/organization collaboration (see WEPAN's Collaborators below).

 
  WEPAN   Women in Engineering Programs & Advocates Network a national non-profit 501(c)(3) educational organization, was founded in 1990 to be a catalyst for change to enhance the success of women in the engineering profession. WEPAN has a membership of over 600 individuals representing nearly 200 engineering schools, Fortune 500 corporations, and non-profit organizations and is led by a board of directors from academia and industry. WEPAN has implemented national projects, produced publications, established partnerships, and nurtured new ideas in support of its mission. These initiatives focus on increasing awareness about engineering and related sciences, retention, and advancement in elementary schools, secondary schools, higher education, and the workplace. The Women in Engineering Program and the College of Engineering at Penn State University developed and implemented the www.engr.psu.edu/fff website.

MentorNet, Inc. the E-Mentoring Network for Women in Engineering and Science developed and implemented the One-on-One Academic Career E-Mentoring Program.

Texas A&M University School of Engineering developed the content for the information components focused on graduate school, pursuing a career in academia, and best practices for mentoring under-represented students towards a faculty career.

Tufts University, Center for Educational Engineering Outreach serves as the project evaluator.

Stevens Institute for Technology, Lore-El Center for Women in Engineering and Science serves as project director.

GE Foundation Support

 

The GE Foundation is the philanthropic foundation of the General Electric Company. Its main goals include improving the quality of and access to education and strengthening community organizations in GE communities around the world. Last year alone, GE, the GE Foundation, GE Elfun, and GE employees and retirees contributed nearly $100 million to educational and community institutions. The GE Foundation has been invested in supporting diversity initiatives in education and the workforce for a long time, including support for the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME) since its inception in 1973.

 
 

Process

 

Candidates who are interested in finding academic positions at higher education institutions and faculty who are interested in finding qualified candidates have to first register with the Faculty For The Future website. During registration, they can choose a username and password, which will allow them to access the secured database. Users will logon to the website using their username and password. The database can be accessed once they have logged on to the website. For candidates there is resume entry form to post information to the database. Upon agreement to the terms and conditions and submission of the résumé, faculty members, administrators and search committees from participating institutions will then be able to search the database using specific keywords to find resumes in the database. For those searching for candidates for faculty, research or post doc positions, graduate students and/or undergraduate research programs, registration will lead to access to a place to post positions and view resume of candidates. Faculty who are past FFF fund recipients may also search the resume database.

The database is on a secured server. Only authorized personnel are able to view your information. Please read the detailed Privacy Statement.

 
 

Site Access

Who has access to this site and the information in the database?

 

All Candidates/Students who register and upload their résumé have access to their own résumé in the database. They can make changes to their own résumé at any time or remove their résumé from the database. Candidates must register before they can enter or modify their information in the database.

Faculty members and college or university administrators can post positions and search the résumé data base for candidates. These résumés include candidates for undergraduate research, graduate programs and/or faculty and postdoctoral candidates. Universities must identify an individual to serve as the official Faculty For The Future liaison. Any individual interested in searching the resume database must be given access to the site by the liaison.

Principal Investigators (PI) are individuals representing institutions that have received GE Foundation FFF grants. They have the ability to search résumés and reject resumes that are not appropriate to the database. All Principal Investigators must register with the website.
