Sustainable Housing Solutions Course and Certificate Program
Students and Volunteers Welcome

AIHI facilitates annual courses (for Penn State students) and summer workshops (for anybody). A 3-part course at Penn State examines how sustainable building methods can be utilized to improve the living conditions common on American Indian reservations.
Part 1
(Spring '08):
Students examine the physical and cultural context in which a green building will be designed and constructed.
Part 2
(Summer '08):
Spend a week on location in Montana assisting with the construction of a green building.
Part 3
(Fall '08):
Document and reflect upon your experience for the purposes of producing informational materials and offering recommendations for future research on housing programs for American Indian tribes in the Northern Plains.

Opportunities :

  • Learn about new and emerging sustainable building technologies and how they can be applied to solve housing problems.
  • Experience the location and people of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation, and the sustainable values inherent to the Cheyenne culture.
  • Help make a difference in some of the most disadvantaged communities in the U.S.
  • Earn a Certificate in Sustainable Building Methods from Chief Dull Knife College, Lame Deer, Montana.

2008 AIHI Program:
In 2008, our program will center upon the completion of the MorningStar House, the first solar home in the Northern Cheyenne community. This home was built in conjunction with the Penn State Solar Decathlon Team. AIHI will also assist in the installtion of a solar hot water system in an existing home. All 2008 attendees will also earn a Certificate Program in Green Building and Sustainable Construction.

In conjunction with the Spring and Fall courses at Penn State, three one-week workshops will be held in the Summer of 2008.

Dates:

Week One: June 22-June 28
Week Two: June 29-July 5
Week Three: July 6- July 13


Get Involved!
For Penn State students:
Penn State students will be expected to attend both AE/ARCH Spring and Fall* courses, and at least one workshop in the summer)
*graduating seniors may be exempted from Fall course

For other students, professional, and volunteers:
Sign up for a one-week workshop in Montana to earn a Certificate in Sustainable Building Methods

Cost - (includes on-site transportation, meals, and modest living accommodations)
$400 for students of all ages, backgrounds, majors, and universities
$600/week for professionals/volunteers
