The second Hydrogen Day at Penn State was held on October 25, 2004 at the Nittany Lion Inn. The event had a welcome turnout of over 260 people from Penn State in addition to 55 people from various industries, companies, and state and federal agencies. On display were 40 posters and 11 booths representing ongoing research and demonstrations, with the best displays earning awards. The event drew the attention of several television and radio stations, magazine reporters, and other local media.
Highlighted was the site of the Hydrogen Fueling Station, developed in partnership with Air Products, Penn State, and the Department of Energy. A Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle (FCHV) was provided by Toyota and displayed outside of the Nittany Lion Inn.
Talks at the luncheon included a presentation by Bruce Logan, Director of the Penn State H2E Center, a welcome by Eva Pell, Vice President for Research, Dean of the Graduate School, and a presentation on research needs by Tom Mallouk, Department of Chemistry. Kathleen McGinty, Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) delivered a keynote address on hydrogen and fuel cell activities in the State of Pennsylvania.
There were two panel sessions, one on Penn State research and the other on Hydrogen and Fuel Cells:
The Penn State panel included presentations by: Tom Mallouk, Department of Chemistry (Moderator); Peter Eklund, Department of Physics; Bruce Logan, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering; Digby MacDonald, Department of Materials Science and Engineering; and Matthew Mench, Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering.
The following panel session, moderated by Bruce Logan, highlighted activities by different companies and organizations. Speakers included: Ed Kiczek, Product Development Manager, Air Products and Chemicals, Inc.; George Parks, Senior Principal Scientist, ConocoPhillips; George Sverdrup, Technology Manager, National Renewable Energy Laboratory; and Matt Younkins, Research Engineer, Ford Motor Company. These panel sessions were followed by a networking reception and dinner, with a special dinner presentation given by Congressman John E. Peterson, U.S. Representative, Pennsylvania 5th District (R).
