INTERVIEW PROCEDURES FOR FACULTY CANDIDATES

Fall 2002
From: L. C. Burton

When faculty candidates are formally interviewed, the following procedures should be followed:

It is desirable that all candidates meet with the Dean if schedules permit, and with as many of the three Associate Deans as possible.  Associate Deans can be scheduled jointly if necessary due to time constraints.  Departments should contact the secretary in this office to schedule appropriate meeting times.
Interviews should normally be for 30 minutes.  Candidates for endowed positions should meet with the Dean for 45 to 60 minutes.
For candidates for senior positions (chairs and tenured full professorships), departments may wish ti schedule an appointment with the Provost.  The Provost should be provided with the candidate's dossier and any other particularly information related to the interview.
Candidates should also meet with faculty and staff from other units when appropriate.  For example, women and minority candidates should have an opportunity to meet with women and minority faculty members.  Candidates should have an opportunity to meet with faculty members in other units with similar research interests.
Interview materials should be provided to this office at least several days before the interview for each dean who is on the interview schedule. Please also send a package to my office for the record, even if I am not on the schedule.  These packages should include the following:

a. Information sheet
b.  Candidate's interview itinerary
c.  Candidate's resume
d.  Statements of teaching and research interests
e.  At least three reference letters
f.  Affirmative action advertisement
This office should be informed of any particular circumstances related to a specific candidate, where we can offer assistance.  Examples are spouse employment, possible joint appointments, etc.
