Furniture is arriving to fill the IDEAS Lab! We are also looking forward to a visit from Dr. Matt Campbell, Associate Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, on February 17, 2009. Welcome Dr. Campbell!

Welcome to the IDEAS lab website!

Welcome to the website for the Innovation and Design for Engineering and Systems (IDEAS) Lab at the Pennsylvania State University! The IDEAS Lab researches new computer-based design tools to enhance and facilitate the generation of innovative ideas early in the design process. Straddling many different disciplines, the topic of engineering innovation brings together many ideas from engineering, computer science, and cognitive psychology. We are currently focusing on investigating the rapid generation and evaluation of new ideas from existing product knowledge and establishing web-based design tools that are accessible to the entire design community! If you are interested in learning more about the IDEAS Lab, please contact us!

Upcoming Design Conferences and Deadlines

idetc The 21st International Conference on Design Theory and Methodology (DTM) The DTM Conference is an integral part of the 2009 ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conferences (2009 IDETC/CIE) and will take place at the San Diego Convention Center, in San Diego, California, from August 30-September 2, 2009.

Call for Papers: This Conference is sponsored by the Technical Committee on Design Theory and Methodology, which is an integral part of the ASME Design Engineering Division. The Design Theory and Methodology Conference promotes research and dissemination of knowledge in such topics as the scientific theories of design, foundations for design environments, models of design processes, design education methods, design management, design for quality, and other areas extending the understanding of and application of the design process. Scholarly papers in all areas of design theory and methodology are invited.

Full draft papers are due for review at the ASME-IDETC website by February 6, 2009.

iced The 17th International Conference on Engineering Design The Design Society and the Stanford Center for Design Research cordially invite you to participate in the International Conference on Engineering Design, ICED 2009, August 24-27, 2009. The venue will be Stanford University’s verdant campus in the heart of Silicon Valley, a short 35 miles south of San Francisco, California. Each day will bring a rich mixture of interactive workshops, distinguished keynote speakers, selected 20 minute oral paper presentations, spectacularly brief 5 minute paper “elevator pitches”, and industry sponsored events. The style is California casual. The community is wildly international. And the atmosphere is entrepreneurial.

Call for Papers: We solicit research papers and case studies on any topic related to design thinking, theory, and practice. We place a premium on evidence-based research. Mindful of earlier conferences in the series we offer the following topics of interest and invite authors to take a specific point-of-view. We anticipate that issues at the intersections will be of particular relevance and interest.

Papers are expected to be about 10 pages in length and those that are accepted in a double-blind review will be published in the proceedings. At the conference, authors of all accepted papers are given the option to present. The format for presentations will be "elevator pitch" (a 5 minute presentation followed by discussion) and selected papers are invited for a "mini keynote" (20 minute presentation followed by discussion). Authors can state a preference towards either with the final decision on format to be made by the Program Committee and announced with the final program by 15 June 2009. In addition, all authors will be given the option to present in a poster reception.

Full draft papers are due for review at the ICED 09 website by January 15, 2009.
