Find a Group for a Class or a Project

Welcome to the Penn State IEEE Group Service

This service is open to ALL Penn State students and faculty.

What can I use this service for?

You may use this service to help you find people. Maybe you're looking for other students in the same class as you to form a study group for homework or an upcoming exam. Maybe you want to work on a cool project and want to find other students with similar interests. Whatever the reason, we hope this will provide you the means to do so.

Can I use this to advertise my club?

No...well, not directly. You may not post a generic listing for students to join your club. However, if your club is working on a project for some sort of competition, then you may definitely post your project. Rule of thumb: if your group does not have an end date, it probably does not belong here.

Are there any privacy concerns?

This entire service is protected by the Penn State login and hosted on the College of Engineering server. No one outside of the Penn State can view the information beyond this page. The only information requested from you is your PSU access ID (xyz5000) so that other Penn Staters may contact you. Also, your name is automatically pulled from the Penn State directory and displayed with groups you are associated with. So in summary, only your name and access ID are visible to other Penn Staters.

How do I find a group?

Click on Find a Group above and log in. From there, you will be able to view all open groups. The listing is completely searchable and can be filtered to display only class or project groups.

How do I join a group?

Once you have found a group you are interested in, simply click the Request to Join button. The group organizer will receive an email notifying them that you want to join their group. If the organizer accepts your request, you will be notified by email that you have joined the group.

How do I create a group?

Click on Create New Group above and log in. From there, simply fill out your group information and click the Register button. Your group will be immediately listed and ready for others to join. If creating a project, it helps if you keep the project name short and elaborate more in the group description.

How do I add someone to my group?

After someone requests to join your group, you will receive an email. Either click the link in the email or click Manage Your Groups above. This page will show you all of the groups you have created or joined, any requests to join your groups, and your pending requests for other groups. Simply click the Accept button next the name of the person you wish to add. A dialog will appear for you to enter a custom message to be sent with the email that they will receive indicating they are now in the group.

What happens if the group fills up?

The group will automatically be removed from the group listing and any remaining requests to join will be hidden.

How can I help?

What a great question! You ask really good questions, did you know that? You can really help us out by telling others about this service. The only way for this work is if a lot of people use it. So tell your friends and classmates and share this website with your clubs. You can also help by not creating ridiculous groups. So things like creating a group for 800 people or a project that goes on for 20 years; that's not realistic at all.
