Senior Exit Exit Survey
Prior to the spring semester of 2001, the College of Engineering and some departments requested that their graduating seniors complete an exit survey. These surveys were not coordinated between the college and department levels, and often had a significant amount of overlap in the questions asked. Most of these surveys were paper-based, which made compiling useful information from them difficult and time consuming. Additionally, many of the participating departments wanted to collect student feedback related to the courses and/or instructors the student was involved with during their undergraduate career.

In the early months of 2001, the Senior Exit Survey System was born. The system was designed to present each graduating student with a survey that was custom built based on the student's major and undergraduate transcript.

A set of questions was generated by representatives of the Dean's office to be asked of all graduating seniors and a standard question set was built for each department. Representatives of each department (and the Dean's office) are able to use a web-based interface to add, edit, or delete questions.

Toward the end of each semester, graduating seniors are sent an e-mail message containing a link to the survey web page. A unique identifier code is embedded in the link. When a student browses to the survey page, a custom survey is built. The survey is comprised of these main parts:

A common set of general questions related to the student's experience in the COLLEGE, and their post-graduation plans.
A set of questions of related to the student's experience in their DEPARTMENT. Students with dual majors within the College of Engineering will see two sets of questions in this section, each set related to one department.
A set of questions related to the courses a student has taken in their major. This section asks only about courses which appear in the student's transcript, or current enrollment records. A student will not be asked about courses they have not taken. This has the dual benefit not presenting unnecessary questions (which may discourage student participation) and not allowing students to taint the data of courses which the have not taken. The surveys' instructions specify that the student is to evaluate the course independently of the instructor.
A set of questions related to the instructors a student has taken a course from in their major. This section is similar to the course-related questions. Each student's responses are recorded in a database for later retrevial and analysis. Because of the complexity of the underlying data structures and individual response confidentiality issues, the complete raw data are not generally made available. A series of data views are in place on the College of Engineering's Data Warehouse server for administrators who wish perform some extended analysis. Most departments use the web-based results reporting feature of the system to access the responses from their graduates. (This includes the responses to questions asked in the general college-wide section of the survey, but only the responses from the specific department's graduates.) The web-based results browser requires departmental administrative personnel to log in similarly to when they work with the survey question contents.
