Streaming Media
Streaming Media is the technology that delivers audio and/or video content (files) real-time over the Internet. Streaming Media files are NOT downloaded to the end-user's computer, hence the delivery is almost instantaneous (depended on network status). The biggest difference between the streaming media technology and traditional file downloads is that viewers don't have to wait for large size files to be downloaded before they could be viewed. In the case of streaming media packets of data are sent from the media server to the end-user's media player, as the player requests. The movie starts playing within a few seconds, after the player has received the first set of data packets. The user can fast forward, rewind, pause streaming media clips.

Another significant difference is the Streaming Media server's ability to deliver appropriate amount of data packets by automatically detecting ever changing network/Internet environments. What this means is that since the server maintains a constant connection with the player, if there is network congestion in-between the player and the server, the server can "negotiate" and deliver lower quality (bandwidth) content. When the network condition becomes normal the server automatically detects the improved connectivity and restores the original delivery.

CEDCC has the expertise and necessary equipment to produce streaming media files for your department or group. It is already producing classes for the College of Engineering Continuing and Distance Education (CDE) in streaming media format. By delivering class lectures in streaming media format, CDE has been able to provide students with an alternate method of learning, as well as save time and money in producing video tapes and mailing them.

Streaming media services by CEDCC will be provided in Microsoft Windows Media format. CEDCC will not be providing any video editing services, it will simply take your existing content (finalized version in VHS tapes, audio tapes, AVI, MPEG files), convert it to streaming media format and post it on its streaming media server. CEDCC will also give you instructions to properly link to the streaming media files from your web pages.

For your convenience, a streaming media demonstration website is available at: http://www.engr.psu.edu/mediademo. This website has examples of streaming media for different audiences, answers to frequently asked questions, limitations and guidelines.
