Database Services

Information Systems' staff have many years of combined experience in designing and maintaining small to large scale relational databases. When your department or group or organizational unit require database services, look no further than the Information Systems. We are your one-stop shop for these database related services:
  • Design and hosting
  • Web integration
  • Client-Server application design and hosting
  • Database security

We are responsible for the Engineering Warehouse database system, which include various databases and related applications. Some of the databases include: Cost Proposal System, Engineering Directory, Course Pre-Requisite Check System, Faculty Self Report of Activity and Senior Exit Survey System. Click on Applications from menu on left to learn more about these applications.

Why Host Your Database With Information Systems?

There are many benefits in having Information Systems design and host your database applications.

Superior Knowledge and Expertise: The staff of Information Systems have been designing and maintaining database applications for many years. We know what works and what doesn't! We have designed database applications that not only benefit the College of Engineering, but also the whole Penn State community (e.g., Cost Proposal System).

For a complete list of database applications and their explanations, please choose Applications from the menu on left.

Data Security: Security is one of the most important criteria of any database design. Without proper security structure in place, sensitive information may become available to unauthorized individuals.

Server Security: The data is only as secure as the operating system is. The operating system and database server software of our database server are immediately "patched" from known vulnerabilities.

Data Backup: Proper backups of the data stored in databases, as well as other related information are critical. Information Systems not only host the databases on servers that have redundancy built-in, it also performs nightly backups of data on alternate media. This ensures that in an event of a catastrophic failure, data can be retrieved from more than one source.

Excellent Customer Service: Information Systems provide prompt and courteous customer services to its database users. Our knowledgable staff is ready to answer any questions you may have, or solve problems you may encounter in using our database system.

Hardware and Software

We use super-fast state-of-the-art servers available from DELL. The hardware of our database server include:

  • Quad (4) Intel 2.0GHz Processors
  • One (1) GB of RAM
  • RAID 5 and Dual Power Supply for redundancy
  • Five (5) 73GB SCSI Hard Drives
  • Uninterruptible Power Source (UPS)
  • Nightly backup to alternate media

And the Software include:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000
