Streaming Media Services

The Information Systems group is the primary resource for all your streaming media needs—from production to hosting to management. We have the necessary equipment and extensive knowledge to integrate streaming media services as part of your web presence.

Streaming media allows a user visiting a web site to access rich media content in near real-time. Unlike traditional movies, streaming media content does not require download. As a result the size and length of a streaming media file has little impact on the user's experience. Moreover, a streaming media server can detect changing network conditions and deliver proper amount of data to the user's player.

Since we started offering streaming media services over a year ago, more and more departments/units have been taking advantage of this service. A prime example is the Continuing and Distance Education (CDE) unit of Engineering, which has been offering distance education through streaming media. The College of Engineering Dean's Office also has the Dean's Greeting in streaming media format.

Why Use Streaming Media Services by Information Systems:

Expertise: Production and management of streaming media content require a different level of expertise—something that the staff of Information Systems have in abundance. Members of our staff have been involved with the production and management of streaming media content since its advent.

Equipment: In order to produce and serve streaming media content in the right format, you need specialized hardware and software solutions. Information Systems have already procured such systems, thus eliminating the need for individual departments to do so. We have high-end encoding equipment, Mini-DV camera and VCR, as well as dedicated streaming media server (Microsoft Windows Media format).

Want to Get Started?

If your department or unit would like to take advantage of this service, please send an e-mail to the Webmaster. If you have a lecture, promotional video, etc. in video tape format, we can easily convert it into streaming media file(s) and place it on our media server. We will show you how to link it from your website. If your content is already in digital format, i.e., AVI or MPEG files, we can convert it into streaming media format so that the end-user can enjoy it in near real-time.

Media Formats

Information Systems provide streaming media services in Microsoft Windows Media format. A free version of Windows Media Player is required to play the content. By choosing Windows Media, Information Systems is able to maintain low overhead yet deliver content to the biggest audience.

If you need more information, please contact the Webmaster.
