Christy Holtzapple
Hello! My name is Christy Holtzapple and I’m originally from Tampa, FL so coming to Penn State was a big leap for me, but being a part of MEP and other clubs helped me to enjoy and succeed in my college career. I was a part of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, where I served as the Secretary and the Social Chair. I also was an intern for the Engineering Diversity Office. Being apart of these organizations allowed me to network with many different people and make TONS of great, lifelong friends. As for the educational part of college life, I majored in Nuclear Engineering, and I am currently working at a nuclear power plant in New Jersey for Exelon. And now that I have been through the college experience, my one piece of advice would be to take advantage of the many opportunities that are available to you here at Penn State. I did, and I achieved everything I set out to do and more!
Kendal Coates
"Being apart of the Multicultural Engineering Program has given me perseverance to not only continue pursuing a degree in engineering through the good and bad times, but to also give back to younger individuals who will one day be in my shoes with advice and any tips I have learned along the way."
My name is Kendal Coates and I am a Fifth Year Senior in Industrial Engineering. I grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and attended Penn Hills High School before attending PennState. I am currently the President of the National Society of Black Engineers and in previous years, served as Vice President and Pre-College Initiative Chair in the same organization. I also coordinated VIEW for two years and served as a mentor, lead, and photographer in MEPO. I am a PREF Scholar and have received three internships in my tenure at PennState. I am a member of SHPE, SMART, Black Caucus,Flag Football and Basketball IM Sports, and I enjoy drawing, spending time with friends, making new memories, and discovering life's secrets.

Maria Andrea Mendez
"Engineering Diversity made it simple, easier, and fun for me to adapt to the Penn State environment; by actively getting me involved with other engineering students with similar backgrounds."
I was born and raised in Panama City, Panama. I decided to attend Penn State because of their great Industrial Engineering prgram. In 2010 I graduated from Penn State with a bachelor degree in Industrial Engineering, as well as a minor in Engineering Entrepreneurship. In my years at the university, I can say I learned a lot in class but even more outside of it. I was involved with SHPE, where I was secretary in the 2008-2009 academic year and was actively involved with the club for all of my undergraduate years. With SHPE I participated in activities such as HSLC, THON, and Rube Goldberg. I also had the opportunity to participate in THON 2009 as a dancer for SHPE, and to be a mentor for MEPO in 2009-2010. All these extra-curricular activities were an important factor to develop me into the person I am today.
Chris Dancy
"Many of the friends and connections I've made are due to the Office of Engineering Diversity, staying involved with the office was one of the smartest things I did during my college career."
My name is Christopher Dancy II. Currently I am a PhD student (Fall 2010) in the College of Information Sciences and Technology. I graduated with an undergraduate degree in Computer Science from Penn State in May, 2010. During my years at Penn State, I have been involved with SMART, SHPE, and NSBE. I was on the executive board for NSBE during my Sophomore year (Programs Chair) and during my Junior year (President). I also helped with the website during my senior year. My tenure at Penn State has been both strenuous and fun at the same time; I have enjoyed my time here and look forward to the future.

Mindy Sanchez

My name is Mindy Sanchez am a junior majoring in Electrical Engineering. I am originally from Los Lunas, New Mexico, but graduated high school from Albuquerque. Since being at Penn State, I have accomplished much. I have participated in programs such as PREF, MEPO, and VIEW, cheered in the Penn State Student Section, been a dancer in THON, and taken on a leadership role in The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). Being a part of all these things have allowed me to grow both personally and professionally.

Krystle Rendon
"In the simplest terms the Office of Engineering Diversity is: A home away from home. I have developed so many wonderful relationships that have contributed to my overall happiness and success, here at Penn State. The best part of being involved in all of the MEP programs was the difference I was able to make in student's lives. Just hearing that college was now an option for some of them or even better that engineering might be a route they wanted to go down, made all the effort worthwhile."
My name is Krystle-Lynn Rendon and I am a 5th year senior in Civil Engineering. I was born and raised in San Diego, CA. I am currently awaiting my graduation in August '10 from this wonderful university. I have been involved in almost every program offered by the Office of Engineering Diversity. Some of the position I have held are: Activity Lead ('08) and Coordinator ('09) for MEPO; Program Assistant ('07 & '09) and Coordinator ('08) for VIEW; WEP Study Group Facilitator ('06); and WEPO Participant ('05). I have also been involved in the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), serving as: THON chair ('07-'08) and President ('08-'09). I was fortunate enough to be a SHPE THON dancer in 2008, where I got to show my support for the fight against pediatric cancer for 46-hours straight! I was also honored to receive the Multicultural Resource Center Inspirational Leader Award (May 2010) and the Office of Engineering Diversity Student of the Year Award (May 2010). On my free time I like to read, draw, hang out with friends and take ridiculously large amounts of picture of my friends. Overall the best part of being so involved were the friends I made along the way and the students I was able to help.
Sebastian Escotet
My name is Sebastian Escotet and I was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela. I am a Chemical Engineering (Bio-Option) major, with minors in Neroscience and Bioengineering. At Penn State I have served as the 2009-2010 SHPE Secretary. I am currently performing undergraduate research with microbial populations in algae bioreactors. I also assist in purification of carbohydrates for growth of fungi and bacteria. The Office of Engineering Diversity and SHPE have provided me with the resources to network with fellow international students and gain a solid base at Penn State. As an international student I would recommend getting involved with the programs of the Office of Engineering Diversity and SHPE.
Katie Tice
"My participation in MEP and WEP has given me the opportunity to meet extraordinary students, network with corporate representatives, and have fun. But most importantly, I've had the chance to give back to others by participating in outreach programs that introduce high school students to engineering, such as the WEP MTM Camp. Thanks to my activity in these types of programs, I've learned that I absolutely love my field of study and that my greatest satisfaction comes from educating young minds about the diverse field of engineering and its possibilities."
Hello! My name is Katie Tice and I'm a 5th- year senior pursuing a major in Industrial Engineering and minors in Leadership Development, Six Sigma, and Spanish. I'm from State College PA and I absolutely love Penn State. In addition to my participation with MEP and WEP, I'm also involved in several organizations here on campus including Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, E-House, and the Penn State Dance Marathon's Morale Committee.
