We all need to eat. But we don't just eat the raw gifts of nature like fruits and berries. In order to have bread, we must mill the grain. In order to plant the grain, we must till the soil and for that we need a plow and that plow need an iron plowshare - so we need iron. Hunting and fishing need iron, and cooking often needs oil, which we get from a specialized oil mill. So you see the pattern.
