Mission Statement
NSBE's mission is to increase the number of culturally responsible
Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and
positively impact the community. NSBE's 26,000+ members are divided
up into more than 270 chapters on college and university campuses, 75
Alumni Extension chapters nationwide and 75 Pre-College chapters.
These chapters are also further geographically divided into six regions.
NSBE had its genesis at a national conference planned and hosted by
the Society of Black Engineers at Purdue University in April 1975.
The Torch
The NSBE torch symbolizes our everlasting burning desire to
achieve success in this competitive society and to affect a positive
change on the quality of life for all people. The lightning bolt represents
the striking impact that will be felt by the Society and industry due to the
contributions and accomplishments made by dedicated members of the
National Society of Black Engineers.
How do WE fulfill the mission? Some of the events that the
Penn State University Park NSBE Chapter does on an annual
basis are:
PREF/ASE Picnic - In the past few years our chapter has
joined with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers
(SHPE) to recruit freshmen in PSU's summer Multicultural
Engineering Program. The picnic is normally held during
ArtsFest weekend, and we get a chance to get to know some
of the incoming freshmen, as well as give them an introduction to our
organization.
Study Nights - Being in a STEM major comes with a lot of
hard work! Our chapter offers the opportunity for our members
to study alone or with other students throughout the year. The
weekend prior to finals, NSBE hosts a Study-A-Thon from
approximately 8am -12 midnight on Saturday and Sunday.
Complete with meals and a choice of classrooms to study in,
the NSBE Study-A-Thon can help future engineers pass with
flying colors!
THON - If you know Penn State, then you know THON!
Our chapter has recently become a contributor to the largest
student-run philanthropy in the world by raising money for kids
with cancer. A large part of our mission is positively impacting
the community, and what better way to support the PSU
community than take the time to fundraise for this 46 hour
dance marathon?
Conferences - The best way to see what an amazing
organization NSBE is and experience the "[two] hypeness" that
is shown by members across the nation, and even internationally,
is by attending a conference. Each year our chapter is represented
at the Fall Regional Conference (FRC) and the National Convention.
Our Chapter Executive Board is also encouraged to attend the
Regional Leadership Conference (RLC).
PCI - NSBE's Pre-College Initiative is everywhere, including
Penn State! Our chapter is working towards expanding our own
initiative, but we currently have one phenomenal NSBE Jr. Chapter
located in Harrisburg, PA at Sci-Tech High School. We make efforts
to visit and mentor these students, help them get involved in NSBE
on a regional and national level, and prepare them for college.
NSBE Olympics - Put your game face on! NSBE Olympics invites
members from other engineering organizations to create teams and
be a part of a tournament that includes volleyball, basketball, and
dodgeball. There are plans in the near future to make this event
into a THON fundraiser by collecting entree fees for pediatric cancer.
NSBE Family Reunion (NFR) - Held on Blue and White Weekend,
this event was started nearly 10 years ago as a NSBE-PSU
fundraiser. The purpose is to mix the current and new (PCI) NSBE
members with NSBE-PSU Alumni. This event is in the form of a
tailgate and is always a good time!
