Endowment History
In 1985, Penn State joined in the national effort to permanently support diversity by creating an office dedicated to increasing the percentage of African American, Hispanic and Native engineering students who would ultimately change the face of the engineering work force in America and the world. What began as a tutoring service headed by a director with a graduate assistant, has expanded to include a permanent staff and multiple programs dedicated to the recruitment, retention, academic excellence and career development of engineering students. Funding is provided through the contributions of countless corporations, alumni and university resources.
In September, 2010, it will be 25 years since the inception of what is now the Multicultural Engineering Program. The MEP Support Endowment Fund has been established to ensure that MEP will be able to continue to provide opportunities to underrepresented students many decades into the future. This places Penn State on the cutting edge of diversity planning among our nation’s top universities. Penn State MEP is setting the standard.
The first milestone was to establish an account for the fund. This was accomplished in Spring of 2004 through the generous contribution of Mr. Victor Ramos, a 1991 Penn State Mechanical Engineering alumnus who remembered the MEP program as an undergraduate. Today, Mr. Ramos is President of J. Blanco Associates, Inc., a professional engineering and consulting firm in New Jersey.
