Search
Engines and Directories
There are 1,800 search services on the Web. We have listed
and briefly defined 10. With search engines, you enter search terms and
retrieve a list of relevant documents or sites. With directories, you choose
subject categories and subcategories related to your interest, and follow
links to appropriate documents or sites. To do a thorough job select several
sites for your search.
AltaVista http://altavista.digital.com/
AltaVista is a multi-search engine accessing the largest
Web index – 35 million pages found on 500,000 servers. This strength also
provides AltaVista with its greatest disadvantage. This server is best
used to search obscure topics.
Excite http://www.excite.com/
This search engine is considered to be one of the easiest
to use and one of the best. Capitalize proper names only.
Hotbot http://www.hotbot.com/
This engine seems to have a preference for product sites.
HotBot is the only search engine that looks for mixed case.
Highway61 http://www.highway61.com/
This is a multisearch engine meaning that it takes the
query and sends it to many different sites. Highway 61 sites include Alta
Vista, Lycos, Webcrawler, Infoseek, and Excite. The biggest advantage to
multisearch engines is in saving time and typing. The disadvantage is due
to lack of standardization in query format. You must enter the query in
the ‘lowest common denominator’.
Infoseek Ultraseek http://www.infoseek.com/
Infoseek is considered one of the best of the multi-search
engines. Word order is important. Put most important term first. Use lower
case queries to avoid limiting search.
Internet Sleuth Database Search http://www.isleuth.com/
Enter a query and then select up to 6 databases to conduct
the search.
Looksmart http://www.looksmart.com/
Considered to be one of the top 10 search engines.
Magellan http://www.magellan.com/
Considered an excellent directory, with sites rated
and reviewed. Search by category and subcategory.
Open Text Search http://index.opentext.net/
Considered to be one of the top 10 search engines.
Yahoo http://www.yahoo.com/
Yahoo is considered to be the premier Internet directory.
Choose subject categories and subcategories related to your interest, and
follow links to appropriate documents or sites.
