PHRC Report #20: Proceedings of the On-Site Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Systems Research Workshop

Date: December 1991

Author(s): D. A. Long, J. H. Willenbrock, C. McIntyre

BACKGROUND:

On May 10, 1990, a workshop entitled "On-Site Wastewater Treatment and Disposal System Research" was presented at the J. O. Keller Conference Center on the University Park campus of The Pennsylvania State University. The focus of the one-day workshop centered on the issues, concerns, regulations, and future research regarding on-site sewage systems.

SUMMARY OF RESULTS:

Develop "better" management systems related to site or system constraints.

Develop educational materials for designers, regulatory officials, and homeowners concerning traditional measures of on-site treatment and disposal.

Review alternative and experimental systems.

Review technology-based systems.

WHAT IT MEANS TO YOU:

This workshop brought together regulatory officials, researchers, developers, and builders to discuss "key" issues and formulate recommendations. Beneficial working relationships were formed between the various groups which led to a better understanding of each group's perspective of the problems concerning on-site systems. This interaction between groups has led to an increase in communication and cooperation between the public and private sectors.

WHAT'S NEXT?

A direct result of the workshop was the development of a proposal for continued research in the area of on-lot treatment and disposal systems. The Advisory Council of the PHRC allocated a sum of money for the project. The project will focus on spray irrigation systems for single-family dwellings. The goal of the project is to develop an "educational package" presented in the form of a workshop throughout various regions of Pennsylvania.
