Science and technology clearly have
impacts on all our lives materially
and financially, but also ethically,
philosophically, and even religiously.
Our environment and institutions
are heavily influenced by our science
and technology, but so too are the science and technologies we have
influenced by the way our society works. If science and technology
are to be the driving forces of the 21st century, understanding them
must be a priority. STS is an interdisciplinary field that works on
investigating, understanding, and improving the interconnections between
science and technology and our society.
Penn State STS offers both undergraduate
and graduate minors and courses and
research expertise in the following
areas:
- history of science and technology
- social interactions in the scientific and technical
fields
- science and
the environment
- globalization and multiculturalism in STS
- philosophy of technology
- bioethics and medical humanities*
- disability studies*
