2003 Mentor Educator Awards

Mr. David McCready
(Science Department Head -- Fox Chapel Area High)

He made me appreciate chemistry so much that I knew I wanted to do something with it for the rest of my life.
-- Christina Osan

Mrs. Dawn Heilman
(Chemistry -- Knoch Senior High)

Mrs. Heilman was the first person to ever tell me about chemical engineering.  She made me fall even more in love with chemistry and helped me to decide on a chemical engineering major.

Mr. Lynn Sontum (Physics -- Knoch Senior High)

Mr. Sontum was very supportive in my college search.  He is a very caring teacher that was always there to help me sort out the important reasons when choosing which college to attend.
-- Kristina Bennett

Miss Angelica Ganser
(Guidance Counselor -- Wissahickon High)

Miss Ganser has always been there for me: whether it was for scheduling or class problems or college decisions. She has helped me make the right choice for my career/major. She hasn’t shown the slightest hesitation in writing me a recommendation letter a whole year after I graduated from high school. She is one person I will always look up to because of her dedication, friendliness, and willingness to go above and beyond to help out.
-- Devaki Shah

Mr. Clyde LaBrush
(Architectural Graphics/CADD -- Frederick County Career and Technology Center)

Mr. LaBrush taught me so much while attending his program.  He made my interests in design become a reality by teaching me proper design techniques and explaining basic knowledge in a way that made me even more excited about learning the subject.  Also, because of him I excelled in the program between 1997-1999.  He helped me receive high honors and be inducted into the technical honors society.  I know that the recognition I received throughout the latter half of my high school years was completely due to his teachings, and for that I am thankful.  But I am more thankful that what I learned from him helped me get into college and continue my interest in design.
-- Pamela Morris

Mrs. Allison Churovia
(Math & Cross Country Coach -- Center Area High)

Mrs. Churovia was my Science and Pre-Algebra teacher in Jr. High.  Then she moved up to the High School and I had her again for Algebra II.  She was also my cross-country coach from eighth grade through twelfth grade.  I've never been challenged as much as she challenged me.  Mrs. Churovia pushed all of her students further than they realized they could go; making them better students and better people.  She stayed later than most teachers, tutored during her lunch break and came in early as well.  She's an amazing educator with new ideas and huge visions.  Many students ask Mrs. Churovia for letters of recommendation because she takes time to develop relationships with her students.  She gets to know what a student likes and has interest in and then encourages them to follow their feelings.  I had many conversations about college with Mrs. Churovia, and just as in the classroom, she pushed people to be the best they could and to go to the best schools.  She gave me confidence that I could become an engineer.
-- Jennifer Lauck

Mr. Robert Rodriguez
(Math -- Memorial High)

I’m nominating my high school math teacher Robert Rodriguez because he inspired me to pursue a career in engineering.  Mr. Rodriguez met me when I was a freshman and since that time took me under his wing to make sure that I was making the right decisions towards my education.  Although he taught at an inner city school, he felt that his students had a wide variety of potential, despite setbacks.    Mr. Rodriguez always urged me to challenge myself and gave me the confidence I needed to pursue a highly technical education.  Even in situations of failure or disappointment, Mr. Rodriquez taught me never to give up or lose sight of my goals.  He is one of the main reasons why I am just one semester away from getting my degree.
-- Erika Mendoza

Mrs. Edna Katz
(Math Department Head -- Cheltenham High)

Mrs Katz was my calculus teacher and challenged her students in a way that no one else ever had. She encouraged me to stay involved in math and physics. She was inspirational to me because she was a strong, intelligent woman and she showed me that I could be one as well.
-- Cristin Mann

Mr. Frank Aiello
(Math -- Mt. Hebron High)

I had Mr. Aiello for AP Statistics and AP Calculus my senior year of high school. He is a great teacher.  He is friendly and really seemed to want to help his students.  I also got to learn and love my first calculus class under his instruction.
-- Lauren Heit

Mrs. Deborah Slattery
(Chemistry -- Danville Area High)

I feel like everything I have done in the past 3 years at college I owe to her.  Almost my entire life I had wanted to study English or journalism until I took her chemistry class in the 11th grade.  She was hands down the best teacher I had ever had.  She really had a love for chemistry and her enthusiasm about the subject rubbed off on me.  She was a tough teacher and made me realize that I actually enjoy being challenged in school (whereas I always felt that English and writing came easy to me).  It was while sitting in her class that I decided my major in college would be chemical engineering.  Since that day, I was accepted to the only school I had ever wanted to attend, I became the Vice President of the Society of Women Engineers, and I am currently on my 2nd co-op rotation living in Texas and working for Dow Chemical.  I am confident that the career path I have chosen will be both rewarding and challenging and will allow me to do many things in my life that I might not have been able to do had I studied a different major.  Because of her influence on my choice of major, I have had incredible leadership opportunities in the Society of Women Engineers and have lived and worked in both Michigan and Texas.  I wouldn't have even met my boyfriend if it weren't for her influence on my choice of major!  So as you can see, she really had a significant impact on my life and I'm so grateful for everything she has done for me!  Thanks for giving me this opportunity to thank her and recognize her for being the awesome teacher she is!
-- Andrea McDonald

Mr. James Keefer
(Physics &  Chemistry -- Brockport High)

Mr. Keefer was the most passionate teacher I've ever had. I entered his AP physics class junior year because of a scheduling mistake but it was one of the best things that has happened to me. He started AP chemistry in our school and he fought to keep it going even though there were only six students in my class. Mr. Keefer loves teaching and he loves science and he was great at both. He never got tired of answering my many questions and he always found ways of making class interesting and fun, especially with the labs. I looked forward to his class everyday (even chemistry).
-- Abagail Rhode

Mrs. Darlene Kellner
(Earth & Space Science -- Crestwood High)

I had Mrs. Kellner as a teacher my first year of high school.  I became her lab assistant throughout the rest of my years in high school.  She was always very encouraging.  She had graduated as an Industrial Engineer, so she knew what it took to be an engineer.  She constantly supported me and to this day continues to do so.  She is one of the reasons that made decide to pursue engineering degree over a math degree.
