WEP Undergraduate Research Opportunities

Are you a female or minority engineering student interested in research opportunities?

We offer matching funds in support of your research experience sponsored by GE Foundation Faculty for the Future Grant at Penn State.

Undergraduate research offers an excellent view of engineering as a profession, with the open-ended problem solving and the intense team work that it entails. It can also give you a taste of what graduate school and/or a faculty career would be like.

What do you need to do?

Identifying Opportunities:

  • Identify a Professor who is doing research that fits your interest
    • Talk with Professors with whom you have or have had classes
    • Go to http://www.engr.psu.edu/Departments/default.asp and explore research projects by departments or by Faculty research interests
    • Talk with Graduate Teaching Assistants about doing research
  • Make an appointment to talk with that professor during her or his office hours
    • Explain to them that you are interested in their research and in getting involved in their research group as an undergraduate researcher
    • You can also tell them that you can access matching funds through the GE Foundation Faculty for the Future Project at Penn State
    • Get approval of hire and commitment from Faculty in charge of research

Obtaining Matching Funds for Undergraduate Research:

 Student requirements for participation:

  • Agree to write a 1 – 5 page report (can be in overhead form) on research activity to be posted on the WEP website and sent to sponsors at end of semester. Required for any renewal of funds.
