Information for Teachers

Explaining engineering to pre-college students is a challenge -- and that's because engineers do so many different things.  Providing hands on projects and experiences is one of the best ways to introduce and explain engineering -- engineers are "can do" people who enjoy designing and creating.

Introducing Girls to Engineering and Technology:

Girls have interests in science and math just like boys do!  In middle school, society begins to discourage those interests in many ways.  As a parent or teacher, you can continue to encourage girls to excel in these subjects.  Even if they do not decide to become engineers, they will have important skills for the 21st century.  Not pursuing higher level math and science shuts children out of exciting, lucrative careers.

Arranging Class Trips to Penn State:

WEP offers day programs for middle school groups that include hands on projects, lab tours and contact with engineering students.  To explore setting up an experience for your students, contact Cheryl Knobloch, WEP Associate Director.
