and instructions about required and elective courses are
provided to all entering students. All students who
enter Penn State as first semester students must
participate in the First-Year Testing, Counseling, and
Advising Program (FTCAP).
Information about scheduling this program is sent to
each student after the offer of admission is accepted.
FTCAP is a two-part program consisting of placement
tests, as the first part, and a full day of advising and
scheduling, as the second part.
Placement tests must be scheduled and taken by all
students. These tests are used to determine the most
appropriate courses with which to start in English,
math, and chemistry. As part of the program, which goes
on from the middle of May until the end of July every
year, students come to the campus to which they have
been admitted to develop a schedule for their first
semester with the help of an advisor. Each student’s
schedule of courses will depend on the recommendations
of the placement tests results, the major of interest
(undecided is acceptable), transfer credits, and course
availability of electives. For more information, contact the Division
of Undergraduate Studies
(DUS) which administers the program.
Transferring Credits for Courses Taken
Elsewhere
The Office
of Admissions
is responsible for transferring credit to the academic record of
any Penn State student. Therefore, all official
documents must be sent to that Office so that the transfer
of eligible credits can occur. Credit will be transferred
for eligible courses in which students earned at least a
"C" grade (or 2.00 grade points on a 4-point
scale). The usefulness of transfer credits in meeting
degree requirements depends on a student’s program.
Not all transferred credits may be applicable to a
student’s major and the University has no obligation
in this regard.
All transferred courses appear on the student’s
academic record with a notation describing their source.
Only the credits for a course are transferred to Penn
State and not the grade. An eligible course will
transfer to Penn State either as a specific Penn State
course, if it is equivalent to a course offered at Penn
State, or as general credits in the subject matter, if
it is not equivalent to a Penn State course. Students may submit petitions
to request the use of general credits to meet relevant
degree requirements and should do so after discussion with an advisor.
Advanced Placement (AP) Credits - Students must
request that Educational Testing Services (ETS)
send their AP test results to the Office
of Admissions
of Penn State University. The Office of Admissions
provides information about how AP credits transfer to
Penn State.
Credits From Other Institutions - Students must
request the institution from which they took the
course(s) to send an official transcript to the Office
of Admissions.
International Baccalaureate and A-Level credits - Students
who have completed upper level International
Baccalaureate and/or A-Level exams must arrange to have their official
record sent to the Office
of Admissions
for the awarding of transfer credit.
