Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering

If you want to work with nationally and internationally renowned faculty, scientists, and engineers, the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering at Penn State is a great place for you. With more than 50 full-time faculty members, numerous research staff, visiting faculty, scientists, and nearly 250 graduate students, we are one of the nation’s largest engineering departments. Degree options are available in either Mechanical Engineering or Nuclear Engineering.

Penn State Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering’s research expenditures total approximately $25 million annually to support students as well as purchase state of the art equipment for their laboratories. Primary funding comes from both industry and government sources such as the Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation (NSF), the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the National Institutes of Health, the Army, the Air Force, NASA, and the Department of Homeland Security. The department ranks 3rd in NSF total S&E research expenditures.

The Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering actively conducts research to generate new knowledge that will strengthen and support undergraduate and graduate education at Penn State, in the United States and beyond in areas such as:
